Shannon’s Thoughts:

Reviewing a art book is a little difficult. I am reviewing both the description of the art and the drawings themselves. What makes it hard is that every image is so beautiful that it hard to come up with so many adjectives to describe the awesomeness.

As I flip through pictures of different fairies and mermaids I am inspired to create similar fantasy art. Looking at the wonderful watercolors I am drawn to how each composition comes together.  One of my struggles with painting is blending a background that goes with the images in the foreground.

Jessica Galbreth has a well known style. You can see with each fairy how they seem to come from the same family or imagination.

I hope studying this art helps me with my own art.  Only time will tell. I also hope to see more of Jessica Galbreth’s paintings in years to come.

High Summer Read- A - Thon Mini Challenge - Art

The Mini Challenges have started and the first is from The True Book Addict our host

This challenge we are to post art work relating to the book we are reading.  Since I am reading The Good Fairies of New York by Martin Millar.  My art is of a fairy with poppies.

Art by Karen Miles.
The Poppy flower is very important to a character in the book who is actually not a fairy but an artist.  Her friend who is a fairy is trying to help her find her missing flower to finish her art piece.
That makes the book sound very simple but in actuality this is a very complex book with many characters.
Neil Gaiman actually did an intro to the version of the book I am reading.

Abigail the Breeze Fairy by Daisy Meadows

Abigail: The Breeze Fairy (Rainbow Magic: The Weather Fairies, No. 2)

Title: Abigail the Breeze Fairy
Series: Rainbow Magic Series (#2 Weather Fairies)
Author: Daisy Meadows
Genre: Childrens book, Chapter book
Publisher: Scholastic
Received: Swap site
Release Date: May 2006
Pages: 80
Rating:

What is it About?

Two human Rachel and Kristy help fairy land retrieve the weather magic back from the evil goblins.

My Thoughts:

I like the idea of the different fairies in the Rainbow Magic Series but every story is just recycled from the first to the last.  I understand that it is a chapter book and kids are just starting to learn reading with these books but there could be more originality besides the names.

There are other chapter books that do not follow patterns like Disney fairy books, The Fairy school book by Gail Herman and others.

I also don’t think you need to read the books in order because they do tell you what happened in the book before this one.

I just don’t know if I will read another.  I might try one of the super sized ones like Shannon the Ocean Fairy but I am partial to that because the name only and I think that is what grabs you with these books.  The girls see there name or name they know and walla a collection is born.

What is it About?

A fantasy tale of how children get there belly buttons from the belly button fairy.

My Thoughts:

While there is little truth to the belly button fairy tale.  I bubbled over with giggles as I read this book.   It is just too cute and adorable to not love. The book also comes with a CD that has a song about the fairy and a read a long. If you have listened to previous books like I have this one has better quality then the earlier book like The Knot Fairy  and The Sock Fairy.
I love how creative this fairy was thought up to be an old grand-mom looking fairy in a rocking chair!

The art is superb as the other book have been as well! I can’t think of a thing I would change with this book including the CD!

Franklin And The Tooth Fairy by Paulette Bourgeouis

Franklin and the Tooth Fairy

Title: Franklin And The Tooth Fairy
Series: Franklin
Authors: Paulette Bourgeouis
Genre: Children Book, Picture Book
Publisher: Scholastic Paperbacks
Received: From Swap site
Release Date: February 1996
Pages: 32
Rating:

What is it About?
Franklin’s friends all know about the tooth fairy but Franklin has never heard of her.

My Thoughts:
At first my thoughts of this book was that it wasn’t that good but now I think of it more fondly.

Franklin and his innocence of not knowing of the tooth fairy because turtle do not have teeth.   His friend Bear looses his first tooth to make room for his growing up teeth.   To Franklin this is a sign that Bear is growing up.   So if Franklin does not have teeth how can he ever grow up.  That is the dilemma that Franklin asks his parents.

There were some different and creative tooth fairies in this book I only got the money tooth fairy but apparently for some of Franklin’s received gifts or money.  So I guess you never know what tooth fairy your going to get as a child but good to know the tooth fairy has expanded her realms of gifts.

Now that I think of the book after a couple of days there is a fondness to it that think children will find too.

Katie the Kitten Fairy by Daisy Meadows

Title: Katie the Kitten Fairy
Series: Rainbow Magic - The Pet Fairies
Author: Daisy Meadows
Genre: Chapter Book, Childrens
Publisher: Scholastic
Received: Given as gift
Release Date: March 2008
Pages: 65

What it is About?
Two young girls return to the fairy world to help the kitten pet fairy find her pet.

My Thoughts: Having read the very first book in the Rainbow Magic Series Ruby the Red Fairy, I think the series has grown into a better read.  It is now more of a adventure then a watered down learning experience for young children.  Not to say that there is nothing to learn from the books I just feel this has more to treasure. There is much more imagination in this beginning of the pet series.

Still for the younger end of the chapter book levels but pleasant to read.

My Thoughts: Lizzie knows other kids in school who have lost teeth and gotten something from the Tooth Fairy, but Lizzie’s teeth are not loose yet.  So she waits eagerly for a baby tooth come out.
I suppose a child who is just learning about the tooth fairy might be intrigued by this story.
It is an older book than most of the ones I’ve reviewed, first published in 1979, and the art was a little faded in my copy.
This was a pretty general story about the tooth fairy. After reading it, I was positive I had read it before.
About the Author: Judith Wolman has written many children’s books, and it looks like most of them were written in the 70’s. I could not find a website on her - if you find one, comment and let me know.
