Shannon’s Thoughts:

Most kids want a pet like a dog or a cat, this kid wants geese. Their family and those around him say geese are not pets. This child disagrees until he actually gets what he wants.

The story is cute and it is written in a way that can help a beginning reader and one that is a little more advanced. I had a good chuckle at the end of the story.

How the kid gets the geese is just not something I think could happen. Not even an adult would have the patience to keep those eggs warm. So the story could be misleading.

It is an entertaining story and I love the ending. Kids who have a love for all animals and want pets will enjoy this one.

Happy New Year 2021 And Tom Thumb Day!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2021!

I hope the first days of the new year has been good and I hope it continues to be good throughout many years.

2020 did not leave anyone unscathed. I lost two family members this year my dad and his sister. My aunt passed from complications from Covid and my dad made it through Covid but I think it weakened his body which was already weak. He passed a week and a half before Christmas…

I have so many boxes of my parents’ stuff to look through and a lot is getting put on eBay. My dad liked to collect memorabilia. So my start of 2021 kinda feels like I am going through a treasure hunt.

As for reading… well I have already finished two books that I started in 2020 but still, it is progress. I in fact have quite a few books that I have finished but I have not written reviews for yet. I still don’t want to stop doing this blog so we will see how this year goes.

TOM THUMB DAY

“Charles Sherwood Stratton, who would become known as General Tom Thumb, was born on today's date in 1838, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Although he was born a normal size, by the age of six months he had stopped growing, possibly because of a pituitary gland issue, such as Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD). At the time, he was 25 inches long and weighed 15 pounds. It wasn't until age 9 that he started growing again—albeit at a slow pace—and he was just two feet, eight inches tall when he reached the age of 18. He kept growing throughout his life and eventually reached three feet, four inches in height, and a weight of 70 pounds.

Stratton was just four years old when he met circus impresario P.T. Barnum, who was a distant relative. Barnum became the boy's manager, and taught him how to sing, dance, mime, and make impersonations. Stratton became one of the "wonders" at Barnum's American Museum in New York City, where he arrived on December 8, 1842. Barnum paid Stratton's father three dollars a week to let his boy be there, and Stratton and his mother lived in an apartment in the museum.” (taken from checkiday.com)

Discovered at age four by P.T. Barnum, Tom Thumb soon finds himself traveling internationally, sitting on the laps of the queens of Europe, and entertaining the masses. He meets Czar Nicholas and the King of Saxony and is invited to the Tuilleries by Louis Philippe. After marrying Lavinia Warren, Tom and his wife are hosted at the White House by President Lincoln. With the country at war, Tom and Lavinia set out on their honeymoon tour and witness firsthand the fracture between the states, the heroism of young soldiers, and the unbreakable spirit of the American people...” ( From Goodreads.com)

Shannon’s Thoughts:

Bobby Mahoney, now an adult and father of two. He no longer remembers his childhood escapades with leprechaun O’Shaughnessey. Bobby now living in America but is writing a book about Irish myths and magical beings. He travels back to Ireland with his daughter Maggie. They stay with the storyteller, Moria McCarthy. As Bobby collects his stories from other townspeople young Maggie learns about fairy folk and magic even though she has yet to believe in them. Bobby searching for truth to the mystical world ends up in a predicament and needs O’Shaughnessey and Maggie to save him.

This book is the second book in a series. I did not read the first book, O’Shaughnessey: A Boy And His Leprechaun, and I do not feel like I needed to. I enjoyed it and did not feel lost or that I was missing anything. I really did like these characters especially Maggie and the storyteller Moria. They had the most depth and I was enjoying how much they bonded.

The story did really have a mixture of America and Irish feel to it. I notice with the other books that take place in Ireland always feel so mysterious and magical along with really drawing you into it. I did not feel the draw so much with this book maybe because there was the fact Bobby and Maggie were from America. And in America, it is a place that magic and myth are different or do not exist.

I would like to read the first book. Although I am not sure how much I will like it because I really did like Maggie and Moira. The first one is about Maggie’s father Bobby and O’Shaughnessey. Could be a fun little romp though. I do feel like there should be more reviews and I am surprised how little there are for this series.

Celebrate Everyday With Book - Red Shoe Day - July 25th 2020

Celebrate Every Day With Books

It seems like everyday has some new theme to celebrate so I thought it might be fun to see what kind of interesting books I can find (new, old, or coming soon) for an everyday holiday. In fact, most days have more than one holiday!

Just so you know I have not read most of these but the ones I pick seem the most interesting and would like to read. You can probably find tons more books for each holiday but I am only going to pick two books for one holiday a day.

Let me know what you think. Do any of them seem interesting to you? Is there another book you think would be a better choice?

TODAY

IS

RED SHOE DAY

SATURDAY JULY 25TH 2020

It was founded in memory of Theda Myint of Australia, who passed away from Lyme disease on July 25, 2013. Some of her friends who were in an Australian Lyme disease support group came up with the day. A friend asked what her favorite color had been, and was told, "Her favorite color was green unless it was shoes! She loved red shoes." Karen Smith, another of Theda's friends, then asked, "Red Shoe Day in her memory?" giving the idea for the holiday...” (from checkiday.com)

Celebrate Everyday With Books - MAY 28TH 2020 - Amnesty International Day

Celebrate Every Day With Books

It seems like everyday has some new theme to celebrate so I thought it might be fun to see what kind of interesting books I can find (new, old, or coming soon) for an everyday holiday. In fact, most days have more than one holiday!

TODAY

IS

MAY 28TH 2020

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL DAY

“Amnesty International is a non-governmental organization that focuses on the protection of human rights—working to prevent abuses to human rights, to fight for justice for those whose rights have been violated, and to expand and enforce human rights protections in international law, by lobbying governments and other powerful groups and publicizing their violations. Their early focus was on the release of political prisoners, but they now focus on many issues. Their main concerns are on the rights of freedom and speech and conscience, and on the right to not be tortured. Other concerns include abolishing the death penalty, reproductive rights, and defending refugees and migrants.

Amnesty International Day takes place on May 28, because it was on that day in 1961 when lawyer Peter Benenson published "The Forgotten Prisoners" in The Observer, which was then reprinted around the world. In it, he referenced the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in particular, articles 18 and 19, which deal with freedoms of thought and expression. He also announced an amnesty campaign called "Appeal for Amnesty." Amnesty International was founded in London that same year, largely by the efforts of Peter Benenson. That is where it is still headquartered, but today there are offices in over 50 countries. Three million people are now affiliated with the group, in more than 150 countries and territories.” (from checkiday.com)

The DIGNITY book advocacy campaign helped create a tipping point for President Obama to endorse the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in December 2010. The Declaration is the most comprehensive global statement of the measures every government must enact to ensure the survival and well-being of Indigenous Peoples. Title: The Daughters Of Juarez by Teresa Rodriguez
Genre: Non-Fiction, True Crime, History, Social Issues
What It Is About?: “Despite the fact that Juarez is a Mexican border city just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, most Americans are unaware that for more than twelve years this city has been the center of an epidemic of horrific crimes against women and girls, consisting of kidnappings, rape, mutilation, and murder, with most of the victims conforming to a specific profile: young, slender, and poor, fueling the premise that the murders are not random.
Indeed, there has been much speculation that the killer or killers are American citizens. While some leading members of the American media have reported on the situation, prompting the U.S. government to send in top criminal profilers from the FBI, little real information about this international atrocity has emerged. According to Amnesty International, as of 2006 more than 400 bodies have been recovered, with hundreds still missing…
...The Daughters of Juarez promises to be the first eye-opening, authoritative nonfiction work of its kind to examine the brutal killings and draw attention to these atrocities on the border. The end result will shock readers and become required reading on the subject for years to come.”
