Booking Through Thursday

Here’s another idea about memorable first lines from books.
What are your favourite first sentences from books?

Is there a book that you liked specially because of its first sentence?

Or a book, perhaps that you didn’t like but still remember simply because of the first line?

I don't usually remember first lines of a book. I usually focus on the story as a whole. I tend not to remember any lines from books. Unless it is really good I barely remember that I read it. I guess I could tell you about books I knew from the start I was going to like. The two that come to mind are Old Yeller and Charlotte's Web.

I looked them up and Charlotte's Web first line is "Where's Papa going with that ax?" said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.

And Old Yeller is They called him Old Yeller.

I'm the same way, I don't typically remember specifics of a novel like first lines unless they are very memorable. Old Yeller is also a favorite here.

Yes, most first lines aren't all that memorable. Years ago, I started keeping reading journals where I can write down the first lines of the books I read. Otherwise, I'd probably forget them as soon as the book is closed.

When I finish a book, I usually go back to reread the first line. I feel that ties it up.

I am like the rest of you; I do not remember the first line of a book. The only first line I remember is when Snoopy is trying to write his book and keeps on being interrupted, but he persiveres. The first sentence is "It was a dark and stormy night." I wonder if there is a REAL book with this first sentence? Judy

Charlotte's Web is a great example. That pretty much launches you right into the story. Thanks for writing about that one!

I loved both of the books you mentioned but like you although I think there are some memorable first sentences most of them aren't.

Those two are such great first sentences. They both sum up the entire book that follows and both get your attention in their way.

I've been going back to read first sentences in my library today and most of them are terrific.

I grew up in a home that had thousands of books on the shelves.

Not surprisingly, I now write novels .....

And yes, I pay VERY close attention to my opening sentences!

Good call on Charlotte's Web, I can remember being pulled into the story so quickly because of that question.

This is kinda sad, but I've never read Charlotte's Web!

I love Old Yeller though. Except of course for the ending ...
