Musing Monday May 2, 2011 - Realistic Storyline

This week’s musing asks…
Do you care if the book’s storyline is unrealistic? Will you keep reading, or will you set the book aside?
Short answer:  I do not care if the storyline is unrealistic and yes I will usually keep reading.

Long answer:
I think this depends on how the book is written really or what subject I am reading. If I am reading something fantasy, or I would even say spiritual, I have to have an open mind about what I am reading.   I read knowing that authors usually write from something that is based in fact or something factual that happened to them.  Knowing that can change the outlook on how you read.   Now the factual things may be lacking in fantasy since most things are made up but even things we make up can based in truth.

Good answer. I'm the same, I usually finish my books.

I agree, the genre has to be taken in consideration.

In response to your Musing Mondays:

I agree with you and think that we are a lot more likely to accept "unbelievable" things happening in a paranormal or supernatural story, compared to a contemporary YA where the characters and events really need to be realistic in order for the reader to enjoy the book.

I have read a couple contemp YA fictions where I just could not get into the story because the characters were completely unbelievable- I did finish them though!

You can see my MM response here :)

Also, I'm a new follower!

I don't have a problem with some aspects of the story being 'unrealistic', depending on the genre.
However, I think, whatever the genre, it is important that people act in a way that seems real. Maybe human nature is the constant.

You're right about keeping an open mind while reading something fantasy. For me, the most important thing is that the characters feel real, even if the contest is not.

I definitely have to have a storyline that is realistic. Otherwise, I never finish the book.
