I enjoyed R.F. Delderfield's To Serve Them All of My Days. Its lead character is a Welsh soldier who is recovering from shell shock from having been in France in WWI. He takes on the job of schoolmaster in a posh boarding school in England because he loves History, learning and teaching. It spans about 20 or so years of his career during volatile times in England. It's very well done, touching, and so hard to put down!
