Okay, the best children's book I've read in a while (not including classics) is The Mysterious Benedict Society, by Trenton Lee Stewart.

It's about four gifted children who go under cover at a private school. It's really fun.

Hm...childrens books?

Well, some of my favorites from grade school are:

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
-it's about WW2 and a young jewish girl and her friend. So great.

Stuck in Neutral (forget the author)
-but this kid can't talk, can't move on his own and his family thinks he's dumb, but he's not. He knows what's happening, likes girls, likes chocolate cake, and more, but his dad thinks that killing a kid like Shawn might be helping to end the pain.

Very good books. I really recommend the second one. It's short, but packs a TON of punch.

Oh, I've read The Mysterious Benedict Society! It's great and a lot of fun! In fact, I just got it for someone as a birthday gift.

I recommend The Girl With the Silver Eyes by Willo Davis Roberts. It's a fairly short book published originally in the early 80's, and I don't claim that it was any masterpiece of literature, but I can say that it was my favorite book for years. It was the only book I could ever read two times in a row (stop reading and immediately read it again and still love it just as much.

Basically, it's a story about a girl with silver eyes... and psychic powers, both caused by the fact that her mother worked in a factory that produced this certain type of pills, and used some of them when she was pregnant. Then she learns that there were three other pregnant women working there at the time, and she tries to find these other children who may be like her. But it also seems like someone is onto her secret...

It's got a scene where she freaks out a babysitter with her telekinetic powers. That alone would get me interested in a book.
