Refer A Book Friday!

It's Friday time to send in your recommendations of books you liked. Remember to give me a little info on what you liked about the book you recommend. As for what kind of subject I am in the mood for how about a good audio book( or a Teen book if you don't listen to audio). Right now I am listening to A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray and I think it is awesome so far but I will need something to listen to next. Don't forget to check out the free book label to see what kind of book you could win. (Psst... anyone not read Twlight yet? It's there)

Shannon, I'm listening to The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan.

I'm only ~ 3 hours into it. Here's what I know so far:

Ruth is the daughter of Chinese immigrant parents. She lives in San Francisco and works as a ghost writer. Her father is deceased, and she is an only child, so most of the care of her mother falls to her.

Ruth's mother is experiencing the early stages of dementia and the book is an exploration of how a daughter deals with it.

So many of Ruth's feelings are universal, in terms of the relationship between mothers and daughters, but some of them are more specific to her cultural background. It makes for a great mix.

My favorite audio book--of all time--and it's YA too--is Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

Since reading this book in November 2006, I have since had the wonderful pleasure of listening to THE BOOK THIEF on audio book. It is read by Allan Corduner and produced by Listening Library. I have only this to say: Death has never sounded so good. Everything seemed to work better for me. My interest was more focused than when I was reading it--which is extremely unusual for me when it comes to audio books. It seemed more beautiful, more haunting. And I loved the occasional accordion. Overall, I thought it was beautifully done. One of the best books I've ever listened to quite honestly.

Have you tried Sarah Dessen's latest book Lock and Key. It's very much similar to Elizabeth Scott's Stealing Heaven (another recommendation). What I love about it, is how she captured the characters emotion so well especially a serious issue like child abuse. The book does have its many sweet moments and of course it romances.

All the characters such as the main character's, Ruby, sister, brother-in-law, even the dog! are a great enjoyment to read. Definitely a great read or listen!

Okay, one of my new favorite books is Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier. I'm a little late to discover it, so you may have read it. If not, you should. It's the story of a young girl who marrys Maxim de Winter, the master of Manderley who's first wife died in an accident. The second Mrs. de Winter can't help but feel overshadowed and haunted by Rebecca, the first Mrs. de Winter.

It's hard to explain, but this is one of the best gothic novels I've ever read. It's a perfect fall read. For my review, go here: http://thebluestockings.com/2008/09/rebecca/

Definitely check out Blue Blood by Melissa De La Cruz. It's a clash between vampires, gossip girls, and a great adventure story mixed into one. A tug-of-war between the past and present with love in the middle and a mystery killer on the loose. A wonderful series with its third book coming out soon. I loved the second book the best so read that one too!
