Shannon’s Thoughts:

Sam is dealing with the loss of her mother and failing high school. She probably does not need the problems that come next which including time jumps, pirate ships, and magic powers from a birthmark.

This a reboot of a sort. This comic story first belonged to CrossGen which was a comic publishing company that created various stories for different worlds with the goal of connecting their stories in the end. Later CrossGen was bought by Disney which had Marvel. Marvel tried to rewrite (just a little) and restart the comics hoping for interest. I had the pleasure of having read the original comics from CrossGen. I loved every series that came from them, including Sigil. This Sigil story is just a little different but it has been so long I am not sure how different. I enjoyed this again very “girl power” and reminds me of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

I wished I had saved the original comics now that Marvel has rights. Out of all the stories from CrossGen to start out with I am not sure Sigil was the strongest. There was Soujorn and Magick…I believe those were the names. Even though this comic is from 2011 I still hold hope I will see more of the story again.

I enjoy graphic novels and enjoy most of Mike Carey’s stuff. Sigil is action-packed and charged with exciting magic.

Shannon’s Thoughts:

A small group of students from Xavier’s Academy travels with fellow student and friend Indra to his family home. Two X-men/teachers Magneto and Rogue chaperone the students. Dangerous magnetic storms have been destroying the town and putting people in hospital including Indra’s brother, who is now in a coma. The group soon finds, Luisa, an interesting girl with the power of controlling light. As Indra tries to respect his father’s wishes, as well as save his friends and the city his family lives in, he must fight for all who are endangered.

I use to read X-men in the 90’s so I am catching up with the stories. Rogue was always a favorite of mine and it looks as if she has much better control of her powers than she uses to.

The bad guys who go by “The Children Of The Vault” seemed much stronger than any characters I have ever seen in the X-men universe. I was annoyed and intrigued by them. I wanted to know why are they so powerful.

If you have not read a lot of the recent comics this graphic novel does put some info in the back about the characters that are new to you (or me). I found it interesting and helpful. I will continue to read comics and graphic novels. They are so creative and the art is always cool to look at.

Shannon’s Thoughts:

Our heroine Katie is looking for a place to relax and somewhere new to rejuvenate herself.  She finds a young woman in England is looking to house swap.  Katie soon finds the home she has found herself in has hidden skeletons. Spirits began to show themselves to Katie. Whether they are there to help or to hurt is something she must figure out and hopefully not too late.

There is a mixture of realism and mysticism which makes this graphic novel thrilling to read. The main character, Katie, finds out things about herself that she thought was bad but is just really a part of herself others don’t understand.  For example she is empathic and a medium of sorts as she sees ghosts.  When in previously in her life when mysterious things would happen her family made her take a trip to a psychiatrist who would then put in her on medication.

The story ends with sadness but also with hope as Katie learns that she is a strong woman with special abilities that can help herself and others once she learns to use those abilities.  I had hoped that there was going to be a series after this graphic novel.  I really liked Katie’s and the characters around her. The story moved quickly and was exciting.  I wanted more and I am sad to say that as of now Rowan’s Ruin is a stand alone.  

Author Mike Carey is known more for writing other comics like Lucifer, Neverwhere,
Unwritten and some X-men. Rowan’s Ruin is a hidden gem with art that may not be spectacular but fitting for the story.
