September Spooky Challenge - Day 1

Rachel at Parajunkee created this challenge at Parajunkee.com

I could not think of 10 stories.  I got to about 7.  I do not really read much horror these days and the ones I do, do not seem as scary as the books I read as a teen.

Edgar Allan Poe is the first author that scared the crap out. Especially The Tell Tale Heart.  The story was actually read to us in school and gave me nightmares.

Then the second Poe story that scared me, would be The Fall Of The House Of Usher.  People being  buried alive and "ghosts" what's more creepy then that.

As a kid these stories were the thing, especially when going camping.  The book is written in the way you would tell it at a campfire, telling you when to make sounds when reading.

Okay I know that many people probably do not think this scary if you have seen the movie versions. The book is much more psychological.  I read this at the age of 13 and had never read anything like it before.  To be honest I am still surprised I checked this out from my elementary library.

Nightmares & Dreamscapes is one of Stephen King's collection of short stories.  One story as stuck with me for life.  I think the title was "Rock N Roll  Highway To Hell".  The description Janis Joplin laughing as maggots pour out of mouth...ugh just gross and creepy.

Salem's Lot I did not read but my aunt had this book in her old bedroom, where I slept on weekends, and the cover made me so uncomfortable I would hide it from my view.  This picture does not do it justice.

The Witching Hour actually story is jumbled in my head but I remember the ghost that tormented the Mayfair witches. He did so in scary uncomfortable ways.

I loved V.C. Andrews when I was a kid (and her early books are still the best!). King and Rice made my list too, and Poe should have... but I love horror and thrillers, so picking just 10 was hard! ;)

That grandmother in FLOWERS was freaky freaky freaky. Scared me too. And oh yes with Poe. Those have to be some of my favorite from POE also. Thanks for doing the challenge with me!

Your right Kate the early VCA was the best. That ghostwriter needs to stick to only his books.

Thanks for hosting the challenge Rachel. I hope you get more participants.
