Sunday Salon - Starting a Book You're Not Sure

Have you ever started reading a book you weren’t sure you were going to like?  I am having a hard time starting any books lately because I feel a lack excitement for the stories.  Some of the books I know I should be liking other I am not sure on.  For example I am starting the book Hyperion by Dan Simmons for a online book club called Laser and the Sword.  It is very Science Fiction and I am more a Fantasy girl.  I have read some Science Fiction books and have been happily surprised that I loved them.  I am hoping that Hyperion will be one of those.

Do you read books out your genre?  Do you end up surprised by them or do you dislike them?

and

What do you when you are not interested in reading but have so many arcs to review?
Do you push through? Do you take a break?

I'll be honest that I'd probably give up. However, with this one, I'll be interested to hear what you think. I've been wanting to read this for a while...it just looks fascinating. Maybe it isn't, but I'll let you be the judge of that. :)

I definitely go through unenthusiastic phases and I often read outside of my genre. I have different solutions, none of which is foolproof! I think I generally find a graphic novel or short story collection is easier to get through but less likely to get me excited about reading.

Usually what gets me out of the slump is getting a few books together and reading the first paragraph until I read one that won't allow me to close the book.
