Shannon’s Thoughts:
The Bagoo family and the Bark Family are neighbors. Every day Mr. Bagoo has a routine when he wakes up he feeds his birds and does his chores. But this day Mr. Bagoo has overslept and his birds are squawking so loud that their noise annoys neighbor Mr. Bark. Mr. Bark has never been a big fan of the Bagoo family and decides to get revenge on his neighbors for the lack of silence.
The title of this book, Backyard Hullabaloo, made me think that this was going to be about a party or dance. I was surprised to find out it was more a story on how people react to circumstances they don’t have control over and their reactions to ones they do. Mr. Bark reacts terribly while Mr. Bagoo looks on the bright side of everything. The drawings of Mr. Bark reminded me of the Pie Man from the original Strawberry Shortcake.
I did not care for Mr. Bark which is probably part of what the author wanted, but I also did not like Mrs. Bark. She seemed to just follow her husband's lead and not think for herself.
Backyard Hullabaloo is a surprising book because there are things that happen you would not even think of happening. I think children from ages 2 and up will enjoy this story and will laugh at the absurd.
